History
The Old Fashioned is the original template that gave the cocktail its name: spirit, sugar, water and bitters. As bartenders added ever more elaborate ingredients through the 19th century, traditionalists asked for their drink made 'the old-fashioned way,' and by the 1880s the name had stuck — with the Pendennis Club in Louisville often cited as its home.
