History
The Black Manhattan was created by Todd Smith at Bourbon & Branch in San Francisco around 2005, swapping the Manhattan's sweet vermouth for Averna, a Sicilian amaro. The substitution lends a darker, bittersweet, herbal depth and helped spark the modern fashion for amaro-driven stirred drinks.
