History
The Manhattan emerged in New York in the 1870s or 80s. A popular legend ties its creation to a banquet at the Manhattan Club, but no contemporary evidence supports it; what's certain is that the city's bars were serving whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters by the 1880s. It remains one of the most revered of all cocktails.
