History
The Martini evolved from the sweeter Martinez of the late 1800s into the drier gin-and-vermouth drink recognized today by the early 20th century, growing progressively drier through the decades. Its exact origin is one of the most debated questions in cocktail history, but its status as the archetypal cocktail is undisputed.
