History
The Sazerac is New Orleans' iconic cocktail, traced to the 1850s and the Creole apothecary Antoine Peychaud, whose bitters flavor it. Originally made with cognac and named for the Sazerac de Forge brand, it shifted to rye whiskey after the phylloxera blight, and is finished with a rinse of absinthe. It is often called America's first branded cocktail.
