History
The Adonis dates to the 1880s in New York and takes its name from 'Adonis,' a hit Broadway burlesque that opened in 1884 and became one of the first shows to run 500 performances. A low-proof aperitif of dry sherry, sweet vermouth and orange bitters, it reflects the late-19th-century fashion for fortified-wine cocktails served before dinner.
