History
Grog originated as the British Royal Navy's daily rum ration, ordered diluted with water in 1740 by Admiral Edward Vernon — nicknamed 'Old Grog' for his coat of grogram cloth. Lime and sugar were later added, and the watered-rum ration endured in the Navy until 1970.
